Past the scars to body confidence

This is a guest post from my sister – the bravest, most amazing young woman I know.  I am so proud of her and how she has managed to become such a kind, caring, beautiful person inside and out rather than allowing circumstances to dictate her life.  Well done sis, love you!  Here is her story…

Past the scars to body confidence

This is not something I’d normally do and I am pretty nervous about it, however, I want to make a difference and fight the stigma against mental health so here it goes…..

Today marks 1 year since I was admitted to a psychiatric ward. I spent 3 weeks in there and it was the most life changing 3 weeks of my life.

A lot has changed in a year and I can assure you that it has been a long and challenging road, but I am on my recovery journey and would love for my story to inspire somebody else to keep on fighting.

I was 12 when I began self harming and ever since I have been hiding my body, my reality and the person that I am. I learnt to be ashamed of who I was, but have finally realised that I have no reason to be ashamed. The people who should be ashamed are the ones who judge me every time I walk down the street, but they aren’t my problem, only the people that love me for who I am are.

If someone had of said to me a year ago that I would be taking part in a photo shoot to help promote body confidence, I would have laughed in their face!

So I guess what I am trying to say is that a lot can change in a very short space of time and you can get better (granted with a lot of hard work, determination & support).

I couldn’t have done this without the incredible people around me, and I know that at times they were pushed to their absolute limit just trying to support me through the hell hole that is called Mental Illness.

I am not saying it is easy, but I am saying it is worth it. So please, if you or somebody you know is struggling – reach out, ask for the help and don’t stop until you get it. You deserve it as much as the next person and don’t ever let anybody make you feel worthless. I am here if anybody needs support. #togetherwecanfight

Thank you so much to Sophie-Mayanne, her images are fantastic and she made me feel so comfortable. Behind The Scars is a brilliant campaign that helps promote body confidence and I urge everybody to get behind it and support it. #scarsarejustproofofhowhardwehavehadtofight
